History: The Museum originated as a project of the Junior League of Fort Lauderdale effort in 1977, when it opened as the Discovery Center, a hands-on museum of art, science, and history, in the historic New River Inn. Several other historic buildings were added to the Museum's compound during the course of the next few years.
