About Eiffel Society
Host your next corporate event amidst an ambiance of art and sophistication, within a setting that was once housed in the Eiffel Tower in Paris. EIFFEL SOCIETY is the perfect New Orleans events venue for your next personal or company party. The English Turn is named after one of the most unlikely events that could occur in North America. Inevitably, the bluffing of an experienced English Captain by a 19-year-old with a Native guide changed the course of history. The French had been in the area (now known as New Orleans) for approximately 20 years, scouting for high ground and figuring out the lay of the land. Iberville and Bienville were two brothers from the Le Moyne family who had been in Canada fighting the English and proving their worth to King Louis XIV. They had been in Canada fighting the English and proving their worth to King Louis XIV when they were captured by the English. In the hope of discovering the Mississippi River's mouth, Iberville and Bienville set out from Quebec for New France-Louisiana, where they eventually arrived. The Iroquois and other indigenous tribes in the area were pleased with their arrival, and they made peace with them. This brought about a sense of tranquility in the area, which was beneficial to New France. A native guide paddled alongside Jean Baptiste (then 19 years old) on a canoe, scouting the area and attempting to understand the river and how it influenced the land and environment. They were taken completely by surprise when they turned the bend in the river and came upon an English Corvette (war ship), which was armed with ten guns on either side. Jean Baptiste and his guide rowed alongside the ship and had a conversation with the ship's captain, who was from England. Upon further investigation, he discovered that this captain was once a Prisoner of Pierre who had served in Canada and New England. A French Frigate, complete with 20 guns on each side, was just upriver, Jean Baptiste persuaded the Captain during this period of relative calm. They might want to retreat to their Caribbean colonies for their own safety. Upriver, there were a few squalid huts and tents, as well as a few guns and knives, but nothing more. As a result of his convincing the English Captain that Jean Baptiste was as honorable as his brother, the ship was turned around. Because of this, this bend in the river is referred to as the English Turn.
