About Bohemian Benevolent and Literary Association

The Renaissance Revival-style building, which stands five stories tall, was designed by William C. Frohne and completed in 1896. It is a rare surviving example of the numerous social halls constructed in the nineteenth century for the immigrant and ethnic communities of New York City. Over the course of more than a century, the Bohemian National Hall (Czech National Hall, also known as the Czech National Hall) has served as an important center for Czech and Slovak culture in New York City. For more than a decade, it has served as a focal point for its community, providing ethnic food, Czech language and history classes, and space for its large community to gather and hold various events. Over the course of more than a century, the Bohemian National Hall has established itself as a significant center for Czech and Slovak culture in New York. For more than a decade, it has served as a focal point for its community, providing ethnic food, Czech language and history classes, and space for its large community to gather and hold various events. Currently, the Bohemian National Hall serves as a poignant reminder of the once-vibrant working-class ethnic enclave that once existed in Yorkville, as well as a monument to an important chapter in the history of immigrants in New York City and the United States. The Czech Republic acquired ownership of the Bohemian National Hall in 2001 when the Bohemian Benevolent & Literary Association (BBLA) transferred ownership to the government of the Czech Republic. In order to emphasize the building's ties to the Czech Republic, it is now housed in the same building as the Consulate General and the Czech Cultural Center. The BBLA takes up the entire third floor of the building.
