Arcosanti Arizona

The Cosanti Foundation laid the groundwork in 1970 for what would become Arcosanti, an experimental community that would be built in the high desert of Arizona, about 70 miles north of the metropolitan area of Phoenix. Arcosanti is an ambitious project that was envisioned as an experiment in living frugally and leaving a limited environmental footprint. Arcosanti is also an attempt at a prototype arcology, which integrates the design of architecture with respect to ecology. Based on a set of four fundamental principles, which consist of Ecological Accountability, Frugality and Resourcefulness, Experiential Learning, and Leaving a Limited Footprint respectively. Arcosanti is run by the Cosanti Foundation as a response to issues such as mass consumerism, urban sprawl, the unchecked consumption of natural resources, and social isolation. The iconic structures at Arcosanti have been designed to be multi-use in order to extend their utility and usefulness in the process of facilitating the numerous performances, workshops, and cultural programming that takes place each and every year. Arcosanti has been in existence for the past half a century, and during that time thousands upon thousands of volunteers have taken part in the building of the community. They have done so by attending intensive workshops lasting for six weeks, during which time they have gained hands-on experience and developed a set of skills that are one of a kind. Arcosanti is the result of the contributions of nearly 8,000 individuals, both in terms of their time and their skills.
